Laurie Johnnson - Synthesis

Band leader Johnson issued this brilliant attempt at fusing classical and modern jazz in 1970 and he was smart enough to use the pick of British jazz musicians. The album features Joe Harriott (his last session), Tony Coe, Tubby Hayes, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Tracey alongside the London Philharmonic.

Years ahead of its' time and sparkling.

Roy Budd - Music From Soldier Blue

Roy Budd wrote the music for Soldier Blue but didn't actually play on the soundtrack. Here he puts matters straight by playing his own version of the score along with some other soundtrack material. Roy was something of a neglected talent for years but is now considered to be an important British jazzman and his records attract considerable interest. This is one of his rarest.

John Mayer - KPM International - Indo Jazz Vol 1

Insanely rare library album issued in 1968 on the KPM label.

This doesn't appear in any price guides but you can bet it's the same line-up that produced the collectable John Meyer and Joe Harriott albums of the same period. The tracks are Indo Jazz Interpolation No's 1 to 4 and they are described as "a fusion between Indian scales and rhythm patterns and modern jazz concepts". No musicians are credited but John Mayer is named as the composer.

Tubby Hayes - Mexican Green

There is a persistent rumour that only 500 copies of this album were pressed and, in that case, this must be the rarest Tubby Hayes album. Issued in 1968, Tubby is backed by Mike Pyne, Ron Mathewson and Tony Levin and it really is top quality British jazz. This copy has some marks but it plays great.

Johnny Keating - Swing Revisited

John Keating is a vastly under-rated composer/ band leader who excelled at everything from writing TV themes & soundtracks to experimental jazz. This album is a sort of tribute to the Big Band era but is more than that. The musicians involved include Tubby Hayes, Bert Courtly, Jimmie Deuchar, Duncan Lamont, Keith Christie, Reg Guest, Barry Morgan and Jim Sullivan. Jaw dropping!

Bob Leaper was a mentor to many of the great British jazz musicians in the sixties and they often found a place in his big band line-ups. This 1964 album is full of great big-band arrangements of the early hits played by an obviously first division collection of jazzers.

Shake Keane - Dig It!

Decca Phase 4 - PFS 4154

Flugelhorn player Keane was an important figure in the 60's Britjazz scene and played with all the celebrated names.

This 1968 issue on the superbly recorded and heavily collected Phase 4 label is his rarest album and he receives sympathetic and inventive backing from the Ivor Raymonde Orchestra.

The material is pop/funk and includes covers of Green Onions, Soul Serenade, Chain Of Fools and Sunny.

A scarce album from a lost talent.
